Taking care of your smile is more than just brushing and flossing (though those are important!). Here are some other steps to consider to take tip-top care of your smile.
Eat Well: Be sure you are eating a tooth-healthy diet, filled with lean protein, fruits, vegetables, calcium products, and low sugar foods. This will help keep your mouth strong. Getting your daily recommended calcium intake is especially important. If for some reason you can’t consume dairy products–an excellent source of calcium–try integrating other calcium-filled foods, such as dark leafy greens, beans, and calcium-fortified orange juice.
Drink Water: Be sure to drink plenty of water! Not only is this good for your general health, but it cleans your mouth, removing food particles and debris. This prevents rapid bacterial growth. Fluoridated water is especially helpful. Fluoride is a substance that strengthens your teeth.
Use Mouthwash: Though not a substitute for brushing and flossing, the addition of mouthwash to an oral health routine can be beneficial for some people. Choose a therapeutic mouthwash, rather than merely a cosmetic one, and be sure to check for the ADA Seal of Acceptance on the packaging to ensure a quality product.
Chew Gum: Chewing sugar-free gum for 20 minutes immediately after eating helps clean teeth by stimulating saliva production. The saliva fortifies tooth enamel and removes plaque and food particles from the mouth.
Visit Your Dentist: Of course, you need to support your home habits with regular visits to the dentist. These should be done twice a year. To schedule your appointment in the Pasadena, California area, call Sean T. Ky at 626-792-0448. Dr. Sean Ky and our staff will be happy to see you!
