FAQ: Are Bleeding Gums Normal After a Checkup?

Sean Ky DDSWe encourage all of our patients to book checkups and dental hygiene cleanings every 6-months. But, some patients express concern when their gums bleed a little after a routine checkup.

Is this bleeding normal?

Well, it depends.

It’s absolutely normal for gums to bleed for a day or two following a hygiene cleaning. It’s also normal for gums to be a little tender. But, if bleeding and tenderness last longer, you’ll really need to come back in for another examination. The possibility of gum disease exists.

Gum disease forms when plaque builds up along the gum line. Other symptoms include bad breath, pain when chewing, and loose teeth.
